Well well, who's been the busy boy? That's right. My cylinder head is now drilled of the offending stud, and tapped/helicoiled ready for the new stud. It took about an hour all in all, with most of that drilling the steel stud out - once we got down to alloy it was like butter with a hot knife (which also made me realise just how careful you have to be). Then last night I decided to strip the head so I could start and clean/paint. Now, I haven't received my valve compression kit yet but I did manage with a socket, a magnetic extension pen thing, and a big adjustable spanner. It wasn't as easy as I imagine the compression kit to be, but I got there all the same.
So, valves out and bagged I decided to take off a valve stem oil seal. Leave them be I hear some of you say, but truth is this is the last time I want to dig this deep in to the engine on the Fazer so I just decided to do the lot while I'm here. When I popped the first one off it was evident I'd need new - they were wrecked.
Now today I got some degreaser and went at them both like a nerd trying to win the highscore on pacman. It did a good job, but I wasn't happy still. After a quick What's App to Wilf Snr I was on my way to use his mighty jet wash, and what a job it did. It has brought them right up! No grease, and a lot of old paint gone - I now have a surface ready for some fresh paint.
The head and block are left drying in the garage as I type this. I'm hoping my paint comes tomorrow so I can crack on with them over the weekend - if I can get painted this weekend, and the valves lapped by Monday I will be a very happy person. A lot of it depends on the seals being delivered however. Anyway, this has been word heavy - it's just I'm starting to get excited by how things are coming together. I'll leave you all with these photos - I'll let you work out which were before and after the degrease job.
